Ru Lai Vegetarian @ Ang Mo Kio

Just before I touch on my Beijing & Shanghai places, here's a place i've adored since young and Only got to realise I've never taken any pictures of this place before!
One of the nights after sunnietart touched down, I went with her for dinner here before fetching my parents home. Ru Lai has been in operation for one of the longest time (more than 10 over years). I got to know this place also because my granny stays near this place.
I believe many people know a lot about this outlet as they serve really value-for-money tze char dishes. Ru lai was under renovation for almost a year before it starts operating. I was still wondering if business would be affected since it was not in operation for such a long time, luckily business was good!

Kang Kong

Aint too spicy and very fresh.

Sweet & Sour Pork

Tasted normal, but i preferred their homemade tofu beancurd skin which they dont sell anymore...

Soup of the Day

Our favourite is always the soup of the day which was the Cucumber "Lao Huang Gua" soup, as it was brewed for many hours and tastes exactly like our homecooked soup. You may even just order this soup to go with rice.

One thing good was it wasnt too expensive for 2 of us, 2 dishes and 1 soup and 2 rice costs around $17.

Other recommended dishes: Butter Mushrooms and Nonya Curry Fish

Location: Blk 226D, Ang Mo Kio Street 22, Food Centre

Opens till 10PM daily

Tian Yi Vegetarian Stall (天一素食)

I've long heard about the superb Kway Chap in AMK but did not have the chance to eat it.
Thanks to clare for the info!
This stall is splitted into half, with one half selling kway chap (which shld be its specialty dishes) juz by looking at the long human queue. The other half of the stall is selling fried bee hoon, mee with its wide variety of dishes to choose from. Make sure you know what you want to order so that you can go on the right queue.

Kway Chap ($ 2.50)

This one is by far one of the best in sg that i've tasted. Its served with a bowl of kway and a small plate of mock intenstines, mei cai (preserved veg), tofu and tau pok. The stall owner must have cooked the dishes in a long period of time, as the tofu, tau pok are immersed in the thick gravy and they taste really good.Chilli is a must try with the kway chap, as the chilli is specillay cooked for the kway chap.I'm definitely going back again for more kway chap addictions. =)
Location: Cheng San Food Centre
Blk 527 AMK Ave 10
Stall number# 01-143
Opening hours: 6am to 1pm

Silver Stream Vegetarian Food (银川素食香)

Hello all, i'm running out of places to write! Please help if you do have good recommendations in your area.. It would be great if we can have something from the North or the West area.
Anyway, clare has earlier mentioned about this place but she didnt manage to take down the stall name and intro more dishes. As mentioned, this stall is located right opposite the famous tze char stall in Ang Mo Kio (AMK). Since the Tze Char stall is going to be closed (in june) for renovation, you may go to this stall for the time being. There are basically 2 separate stalls in this coffee shop. One selling the mains - e.g. mixed veg rice, tze char, kway chap while the other sells just Rojak, popiah and pancakes.

Popiah $1.00

I love popiah to the core and this is so far the BEST I can find in SG. Earlier i've blogged about the popiah at circuit road being famous, but well well, this stall's popiah is truely heavenly. Comprises of Lettuce, Egg, Beansprouts, Veg Ham, and loads of turnip. Juicy and melts completely in your mouth. Do let them know if you do not take eggs though. The norm is to order the main from another stall and get 1 popiah as your side, that makes your meal complete!

Minced meat dried noodle $2.50

It seems like Bah Chor Mee is a popular dish in AMK as there are 3 places that people would go. 1 is the stall at Blk 128 called Mai Zhi Su (MZS), there is a stall near Ave 4,which i've yet to write about too, and then, there is silverstream. The noodles serving is big and comprises of fishballs, minced meat stew with mushrooms, topped with fresh lettuce. Noodles are chewy, but not as nice as MZS, as they use noodles of different texture. The soup however, is a disappointment as it was really tasteless. If you are keen to try better noodles and soup, MZS would not disappoint. Nonetheless, if you are not so picky, this noodles is good enough.

Also, there are plenty other choices available. E.g. Claypot Rice (which was highly advertised in the papers), Kway Chap and other tze char. You may refer to the earlier link provided by clare. Lastly, the popiah is a MUST try!

Location: Blk 226F Ang Mo Kio Ave 1 #01-697 S566226 (Silver Stream Coffee Shop)

Keat Lim Vegetarian Stall 吉林素食 @ AMK

Got to know that they have 3 outlets to date!~
This is contributed by Jeslyn sis.. Thanks girl for your support! This stall has been around for ages and I remember eating at this outlet when i was younger. However, these days whenever Im at AMK, i'll always go for the bah chor noodles at 128 or the tze char at 226. Thanks to Jeslyn for providing me your review~ Note: This owner is not the uncle who retired at the Ji Lin at bedok.

Stir-Fried Sambal Tapioca Vegetables $5

Freshly cooked and not too oily. The sambal chilli is superb, aint too spicy and blends well with rice. You may also opt for their sambal kang kong as the sambal chilli is the same.

Hot Plate Sweet and Sour Fish $10

Supposed to be served with the ah char (Sour Salad) on top.. but we requested not to add it in as we don't really like it. Served piping hot and the sauce is a little sour and spicy. The fish does mix well with the sauce. Note that the standard does drop a little when crowded.

Sauteed Monkeyhead Mushrooms with dried chili $8
As this was the first time we order this dish, we couldnt comment much. Doesnt taste spicy at all. Lots of vegetables available hence make it a little more healthier. I cant make out if it is really monkeyhead mushroom or the abalone mushroom instead.

Other dishes available:
Cereal Prawn, shark's fin, Custard Abalone Mushrooms, Mutton Curry etc.
Location:
1. Blk 728, Ang Mo Kio Ave 6 (Beside AMK Courts)
Opening Hours: Till 9Pm
2. Blk 91, Whampoa Drive
3. 244A Upper Thomson Drive

Vegetarian Stall in Ang Mo Kio

A Pity there is no signboard for the vegetarian stall. Nonetheless, it is not difficult to spot this new stall, as it is located just opposite the famous Tze Char stall in Ang Mo Kio at Blk 226. This is definitely a new competitor.
Thanks to Clare for her contribution once again!

Kway Chap $2.50

Served with a plate of mock meat, beancurd, preserved veg (mei cai) and tau pok.
The Beancurd is very soft and preserved veg is tasty, not too saltish.
Chilli sauce tasted well with kway chap, not too spicy or sour. Portion is just right for ladies. But you may order another bowl of Kway if you are a big eater.

Black Pepper Steak Rice $4

Its quite nicely presented, served with rice and egg. It would be better if there are vegetables available. The black pepper sauce tasted a little spicy but the veg steak is very chewy and good.

Other Recommendations: Mee Goreng, Char Siew Noodles, Minced meat noodles. In the coffeeshop are 2 other small stalls that sell hand made popiah and rojak. Hand made popiah is worth a try! Costs $1 per roll. (Do let the stall owner knw if you do not want eggs to be included)

Mai Zhi Su Vegetarian Food (麦之素)

Just got back from Asian Vegetarian Congress III, really enriching and great experience. Anyway, apologies for the late updates. Many thanks to Clare for her input as well, as she has helped me took quite a lot of pictures for the shops/cafes she frequents.

Here's Mai Zhi Su ~
Ba Chor Noodles (素肉燥面) $3.00

Signature dish from the shop, this Ba Chor (Minced Meat) Noodles is a must try. Everything is homemade, hence you will not be able to get it elsewhere.

Chicken Chop Noodles (素鸡排面) $3.80

Chicken Chop is large and crispy, and it tastes perfect with the noodles. My bro-in-law's favourite dish!

Lao Di Fang Vegetarian Cafe (老地方素食)

Lao Di Fang on the Move again! Relocated Add below~

Anyway, last night as we had a craving for the food there, my second sis decided to give us all a treat. Woohooo!

Braised Beef Noodles (红烧面 ) $6.50

This is my family's all time favourite. My mum loved the Ma La (spicy) version. The soup is tasty and the noodles is chewy. Also, there is a lot of "beef" slices given. Fret not, it is not mock meat here. The "beef" is in fact made from mushrooms. Therefore, if you are not into mock meats, this is a good choice.

Kampong Chicken Rice Bento (山鸡排饭) $6.50

Other than noodles, the bentos totally captivated our hearts. Served from a nice box (as shown), not only the chicken is tantalising, the grilled corn is superb too! Nonetheless, the cafe serves free soup which you may help yourself to as many bowls as possible. There is also watermelon as your fruit after meal.

Pork Ribs Rice Bento ( 排骨饭) $6.50

The rice served is mixed with brown rice, which makes it a healthy choice too! Of course, there are other non-fried choices like the Eel Fish Rice Bento.

Braised Tofu Claypot (红烧豆腐煲) $8.80

As my dad is a traditional uncle, he is not very into bentos but he loves steamy hot dishes like that which he can go with Rice. The dishes here are not bad, but I would highly recommend the Beef and Tofu Stew (牛腩豆腐煲) as it is quite unusual to get it elsewhere.

Other foods~

Side Dishes

Went there again the other day with my colls and irene loves the Cold Tofu So much that she took a total of 5 pictures (with different styles..). Cold Tofu is a dish where they serve homemade special sauce on fresh tofu (uncooked). It tastes heavenly as the sauce is not too saltish but at the same time the tofu is smooth and melts directly. On the right side is the Abalone Muchroom (fried). It is sprinkled with chili powder to make it tastier.
