Just Greens @ Tampines

As far as I understand, there are 4 Just Greens outlets and 1 restaurant in Singapore. In Tampines alone, there are 2 outlets. One is located at east link, the Tampines Interchange Food Court, And another is a the S11 food court where Prime Supermarket locates. I have tried at both places before, but the one at tampines interchange charges too high rates that my sister calls it the 杀人放火 (meaning its so expensive that you can kill) stall! Reason being they charged her 5 bucks for a plate of rice with 2 veg and 1 tofu. It set us thinking: How ex could veg be? Charging high rates at a normal veg stall could easily chase patrons away, especially when many people do think that vegetarian food is supposed to be cheaper.

Anyway, I personally prefer the other stall, which takes a 8 mins walk from the interchange. Tried the chicken rice and I think its really not bad!

Chicken Rice $3.50

This is quite common at a lot of places. The chicken can be brought from suppliers. So you simply need to steam with minced ginger and mix with a little soy sauce and its good to serve!

Vegetarian Food @ Giant Tampines

This stall has been around for sometime since Giant open at Tampines. I went there a couple of times, food is really not bad!

Claypot Noodles $3.50

Im not exactly a fan of Claypot noodles, but wanted something hot and a little soupy so tried this. I liked this kind of noodles and not the yellow fat noodles. Full of vegetables and mushrooms. The taste is not too bad as well. Other than this, the stall also sell your usual mixed vegetables rice.

Other recommendations: Laksa

Zi Zai Vegetarian @ Tampines

Zi Zai vegetarian stall has been around for many years before it is relocated to Tampines. According to the boss, there are currently 2 outlets operated by himself and his sister. His sister's outlet is currently at Tampines, while his outlet is at Aljunid. They used to be 2 stalls at circuit road but they have since relocated in view of the renovations. According to the boss, they do not intend to move back to Circuit Road after renovations are completed. Last weekend I went to the Tampines outlet for dinner, and I have completely fallen in love with their hokkien mee.

Hokkien Mee

Comprises of lots of vegetables, egg, veg fish cake, tofu and some mock stuff. I like the way it is cook whereby the noodles are soft but not overcooked, and the gravy tastes heavenly. Do let the chef know if you do not take eggs.

Sweet & Sour Pork Rice

The serving is huge and luckily my dad shared this dish with me. If you do not take so much rice, do inform them beforehand. The Pork is made of mock meat, and is nicely stir fried in sweet and sour sauce.

Kway Chup

My mum is a mega huge fan of Kway Chup and she can have this dish almost every day. This is yet another huge serving. Comprises of the norm - tofu, taupok and egg. The soup is heavenly! It is not oily and has a strong aroma of tonic herbs.

Prata/Satay

Apologies for th ugly picture as I only remembered after eating my prata halfway. Hence the prata is half-eaten. It is good to see more local delights like roti prata available in vegetarian places. The satay tastes good too. However, please note that the satay is deep-fried and not grilled.

I do not remember how much each item costs, we ordered 10 satays and 4 pratas in addition to the above and inclusive of 3 drinks for $22. It is quite affordable for a family of 4, and I was left fully satisfied after this meal. It is usually packed at night, so be early if you do not want to wait too long for a seat. They do serve quite fast, and opens till 11pm at night. Hence for supper lovers, this is one place to look out for if you want a meal after 9pm! It is making me envious that Tampines is becoming more and more vegetarian friendly!

Yuan Man Vegetarian (缘满素食)

I've always thought that it is such a blessing to be staying in Tampines as it is growing into a much more vegetarian friendly place with lots of cafes and tze char stalls coming into action, it would be much better if any ONE of the three malls has 1 stall available. Thanks to clare's recommendation, this is my 2nd visit to this place as I normally have to recee before introducing to my parents who are picky eaters. Well, my efforts did not go to waste as I promised my mum the Kway Chap is a good cheap meal u can never get elsewhere in the Eastern side of SG!

Kway Chap $2

I ate this during my recee session with WJ the other night before heading to Ho's place for our fav. pastime. Anyway, this Kway Chap did not disappoint as the soup is tasty and you could feel that the beancurd and Tao Pok are stewed for a long time making it really juicy. I wouldnt say this is the best kway chap in sg as I've yet tasted at every single place, but this is no doubt one of the better ones available. Even WJ who is a non-veg kept stealing my tau pok despite the fact that she had her plate of meat hor fun in front of her. On our second visit, I recommended this to my mum and she loves it too. She finds it hard to believe that we can still find kway chap at this price ($2!!) as tampines is one of the growing towns with prices going up everyday.

Ginger Chicken Rice/ Ginger Fish Rice Set $3.50/set

I had wanted to try out the Tze Char but had to eat the set rice as mum wanted to try the kway chap badly. Nonetheless, the set rice did not disappoint. We ordered both the Ginger Chicken and Fish. The ingredients cooked in both sets are almost the same with green peas, carrots and capicums except that the meat patty are different. I like the sauce a lot as it blends well with the rice. Sauce should be a mix of veg. oyster sauce, pepper, dark soya sauce etc. Tastes really good and it is served piping hot in a small wok.

Stir fried Black Pepper Udon $3.50

I remember to have earlier blog on Yuan Xiang's Stir-fried Udon which I like. Now we have a competitor, at a cheaper price too. YX's udon costs $5 per plate. This is much cheaper and it tastes just as good too!

Other than the above, we ordered fish and chip as well, tastes quite normal, and a pity that i have forgotten to take that picture. In addition, I do see quite a lot of families eating the Tze Char as well. There are just too much to try out here that I would definitely be back again. They serve daily brewed soup like peanuts with lotus root soup that seem to be very popular. If you are going for more economic choices, you may eat the mixed vegetables rice as well, there are more than 20 dishes to choose from. The only con here is that the coffeeshop is always very packed with crowds and parking is limited too.

Note: Tze char is only available in the afternoon and they do catering as well.

Ikea - Tampines/ Alexandra

Thanks to huimin for providing the information. Im rather amazed that a restaurant famous for its meatballs does offer vegetarian options. This is non other than the furniture guru IKEA.
Hence I went there for lunch with the colls one afternoon to try. Food was not fantastic, but its definitely a great move to care a little for the environment.

Vegetarian Fried Bee Hoon

Your normal fare of beehoon which comprises of veg, mock meats, fried mock goose and mushrooms. The sauce for the bee hoon tasted wierd as it made the whole thing soggy. Hence if you like drier versions, stop the auntie before she pours in the sauce. Tasted normal, a little blend. Serving is big but the same goes to the price too. It costs $5++ per plate. Anyway, if you are with a friend shopping in IKEA and don't want to move elsewhere, there is still this option available.

*One thing good is that they have different food items everyday. See their website for the different dishes everyday!

Yuan Xiang Vegetarian (园香素食)

The other day me and the girls had a gathering.. and I brought them to this stall at bugis for a good meal. Yuan Xiang has been around for quite some time and one of their famous dishes is the Salad Prawns.

Salad Prawns
Crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. The girls favourite. Fran commented that it tastes like the real one. hehehe. Not suitable for people on diet though.
Black Pepper Udon

This is the best Black pepper Udon I have tried so far. The black pepper taste is just right and it is not too spicy as well. Serving is also enough for 2.

Mee Goreng

As compared to the Udon, there are more ingredients in this plate of mee goreng. However, taste wise is just so-so. Perhaps it is becos we ate the more tasty black pepper noodles first. Nonetheless, if you eat this alone, it is really good as well.

Sweet and Sour Abalone Mushroom

This dish in chinese is called 世界名片。The abalone mushroom are fried and then cooked with sweet and sour sauce. I love it cos its crispy too!

Spicy Soup

Really Spicy. If you have a weak stomach, avoid this. I like it as there are many ingredients in this soup.

Kang Kong

You might see me ordering this dish everytime. Simply bcos i love it. However, I think Green Connection sells the best dish so far.

Overall, Yuan Xiang has been in the market for years and they have opened 4 outlets so far. Hence, they do have a big variety of dishes available for all. Cost wise I believe is affordable to all, we ordered 2 noodles and 4 dishes this time round and it costs a total of $36, which is $9 per person and we could not finish everything.

Simple Food Vegetarian (原味素食)

The owner of this cafe used to operate at 木船..however, they have since moved and relocated in Tampines. News: thanks to Lina for informing us that Simple Food has got a new outlet at downtown east. thats really great news for vegetarians!
Unique Dish: Mexican Steak

Mexican Steak (墨西哥牛扒) $6.50
I had a craving for this steak before my trip to Taiwan. Hence my parents were very kind to bring me there for a last meal. The steak tastes really good. On the top part is a layer of melted mozzarella cheese, with a spead of home-mixed bolognaise sauce in the middle, making it very unique. The serving is just right. However, if you are a big eater, you may order another plate of pasta.
Other recommendations: Curry Rendang Baked rice, Shabu Shabu pot, Mutton Soup Noodles (only available on certain days), Adegashi Tofu.
