Gokul Vegetarian Restaurant @ Little India

I finally went to Gokul after MUCH persuasion by my sister sunnietart and gwennie who assured me they serve really good non-indian cuisine as well! And here finally a post on an Indian restaurant! So one of the nights I finally went with sunnietart and my cousin. Gokul is one of the few vegetarian places that do not contain Eggs, Onion and Garlic in their cooking, so everything on the menu can be ordered! However, I believe they do have milk in some dishes or drinks like the mango lassi which I totally adore.

Restaurant Front

Has 2 shop spaces located on the ground floor of a shophouse.

Mee Rebus

This was highly recommended by gwennie as she loved the mee rebus here. Perhaps I had really high expectations when it comes to mee rebus as I have not found any alternative to the one at Ubi. I find this mee rebus so-so only. Wasn't fantastic, but it was still okay. The only ingredient here was the multiple pieces of beancurd and lots of noodles. I find it rather expensive.

Indian Rojak

I missed the indian rojak a lot from Nan Pu Tuo (Geylang) and there isnt much veg indian rojak places in Singapore. Hence I wanted to try out this. Wasn't too bad, the sauce was okay in comparison. Portion however is big and we almost couldn't finish it! It comprises of Fried Beancurd, Veg Yam Roll and Flour Balls. Not exactly a healthy dish since its all deep fried.

Tahu Goreng

It is not recommended if you order both indian rojak and Tahu Goreng together as you may suffer from Beancurd Intoxication like I did! I was getting tired of Beancurd after my 5th or 6th piece of beancurd, regardless of the different sauce. It was a nice presentation though. The sauce was really thick and the chef was really generous with peanuts. A good dish on it own.

Kambing (Mutton) Soup

Sunnietart's favourite soup! Im never a fan of kambing soup due to its strong flavour of tamarind powder and spices. Anyway she loves it and I guess she is missing it dearly now.

Chicken Rice

I was rather surprise that they even have "Chicken Rice" in the menu! Cousin ordered this as we read from the forums that this was good! I quite like the rice as it was quite fragrant, the best was the chili, really spicy! Chicken was the usual veg mock meat that we can get frm most veg suppliers.

Murtabak (Mutton)

I've always been wanting to try murtabak as the one sold at zi zai was a total disappointment. This was so good that cousin finished 6 out of the 9 pieces! Its basically flour wrapped with mutton curry within. Crispy on the outside, chewy meat on the inside. The curry was acceptable in my opinion. In addition, there are many other fillings available like sardine, chicken etc for you to choose!

I will surely come back to try the rest of the dishes.

VegSenz cafe @ Serangoon

Dear friends, my apologies, as I've been busy with work since my trip that I even countdown in the office. Finally its year 2010! Isit it great to feel the freshness of the year?! Well, even though the summit didn't explicity urge the world to go vegetarian, i still continue to contribute to my blog to encourage this diet. Thanks to all of your support, my blog is growing well with more of you reading it. Its also through this blog I get to know more friends and fellow blogger like Luke and Crystal! I wish everyone a great year ahead as I bring to you more food places! Upcoming: Contributions from you and some wedding reviews and my recent macau gem finds.

This post is done by colin, thanks so much colin! Keep your posts coming! This cafe has been previously written by Luke too!

This cafe is a vegan cafe and everything here is organic. The decor is clean , pristined and quite trendy, probably an attempt to attract the younger crowd. You can chose between and outdoor alfresco dining, or the airconditioned indoor dining area. Personally i prefer the indoors because it is less noisy from the busy traffic and cooler.

Menu

There are many dishes to choose from, and i've decided to order the colourful noodles, organic sushi and the szechuan spicy sour noodles.

Colourful noodles $7.80

The presentation is really good! The noodles are really colourful! See all the virbant colours of noodles and fresh vegetables, there is even alfafa sprouts on it. It has this vegetarian BBQ sauce taste and a good dressing of eggless mayo. It is a cold dish and rather refreshing to eat on a hot summer weather. Its kinda similar to the liang ban mian 凉拌面 (cold noodles) in taiwan, but very appetising and slightly sweet. However, the portion is quite small.

Organic sushi $7

It tasted really similar to that of the organic sushi from fortune centre, except that the seaweed is not as fresh cos its rather soft and less crispy compared to the one in fortune centre. taste wise it is similar and quite sweet. very refreshing too.It has beet root, tapoica and carrots.

Spicy noodles $7.50
This is a warm and spicy dish. However, it was not very spicy and not very sour also. The tanginess is just right and really whetts your appetite for more mouthful of noodles. the noodles are springy and similar to those of the colourful noodles, not too sure if its self made or bought, but definitely not the ones u can buy from the wet market. The gravy is thick, slightly sour, spicy and has bits of black fungus, tofu, carrots, topped with fresh carrots and cucumber strips. Overall the feeling is warming to the stomach, and satisfaction is guranteed. This portion is good for 1 person.

Overall, the food tasted has been light but satisfying. For heavy eaters, you may need to eat a bit more to quench your hunger. The only setback about this cafe is the pricing of food. Personally i feel that everything is overpriced, even with the ambience and service. There is no Service charge nor GST.

Le Cafe Confectionary

Was introduced by bubby (my boss's wife) when she brought this for us sometime back. Le Confectionary is so far the only shop i've known to sell this special tart!
Beancurd Tart $5 for 6 pcs

From the outlook, you may think that this is your usual "egg" tart. However, instead of the high-cholesterol egg, this filling here is actually beancurd (Tao Hway) instead! ALso, the colour is slightly lighter than the usual Yellow. The texture is smoother and softer than egg, doesnt taste too sweet and is encased in a delicious pastry. No pork/lard is used here. However, I believe there is butter or milk in the crust. Hence its not suitable for vegans.

Other than this beancurd tart, the confectionary sells your usual cakes and patries as well.

Diet: Vegetarian, may contain milk/butter.

Cafe Salivation

I've yet visited this place even though there has been much hype and discussion in the forums. The meet up group has also organised a gathering here filling up almost every seat at this 2 storeys cafe. Sunnietart went a couple of days ago and has been talking about how GOOD the food was. This cafe is owned by the same group as the successful Raj Restaurant in Singapore. It is definitely a new venture into non-indian vegetarian fare by creating various options for all.

Veggie Soya Burger (Price Unknown)

Picture taken from sunnietart's FB

She took the soya burger and found that the veggie patty is light and soft unlike the usual mock patty. The mushroom soup was also tasty but was too late for a picture by the time she remembered.

Other than these 2 dishes, Cafe Salivation’s menu also includes Italian food like pasta and pizzas as well as Mexican dishes like Enchilada & Quesadilla. It is definitely a new avenue for vegetarians in Singapore. *Some dishes do include garlic/onion. Do enquire the staff for more info while placing your orders.

All in all, it is a neat and clean place that is strategically located right opposite Mustafa. Its good ambience and service has certainly leave a good impression for all. I guess 7 sensations has got a strong competitor now.

7 Sensations

Hey Peeps, I'm so so sorry for no updates for the last couple of weeks as I've been busy baking over my weekends and have not gone to new places for food. Anyway, my sisters and I went to the Seven Sensations (after much recommendation by my sister) to celebrate my cousin's birthday. Lonnie Tart went there during Xmas, and I had earlier posted on the X'MAS dishes here. This time is to Intro on the dishes on a normal day, which i think its worth your time travelling there. Ambience is great, and Im surprised that the restaurant is quite full even on a weekday.

Mango and Avocado Salad

This Salad is filled with fresh lettuce, shredded carrot slices, Mango and Avocado slices and then, topped with pinenuts. Lastly, it is blended with Vinaigrette, making the taste really unique. I adore avocado back then in Australia. So, I think this dish is a mix blend of sweet and sour taste, which can really open up your appetite for the night.

Clam Chowder Soup

Ever since Lonnie intro this soup to us, she has not stopped talking about how GOOD the soup was. So, my cousin called to order for this soup when she made the reservations. This soup is not made everyday, so we felt truely privileged to be able to taste it. This made me feel that the service is great, as the chef himself is willing to make the exception just for us. I love this soup completely as well. There is a mix of mock ham, mushrooms and other chopped ingredients in tomato-based soup. They blended well completely. There are other soups like mushroom and potato soup, however, they are not my cup of tea.

Baked Potato

Next came the baked potato, which tasted a little blend, but unique. The potatoes is in a form of sheets, where it is layerised like a lasagne. In between the potato is cheeses. Hence it does blends well with the potatoes.

Lasagne

As the restaurant serves both western and chinese dishes, we ordered a little of both worlds to try. Lasagne has a mix of eggplants, spinach, flour and cheese. Tastes quite normal.

Curry Fish Head

The curry fish head tasted quite spicy, and not served on a daily basis as well. You may like it if you love brinjals and ladyfingers. Hee.
Pizza

I cannot quite remember how the pizza tasted, but the crust is thin. Quite normal as what other places are selling.

Baked Rice

Baked Rice is not sold everyday as well. Hence, do check out the notice board on the daily special. The baked rice is mixed with mixed veg and mushroom, topped with baked cheese. I liked it as the risotto tasted just nice, not too soggy and soft.

Braised Noodle Soup

Soup is cooked with Radish and Carrots, making the soup sweet and there are a lot of ingredients in it. Of course it cannot be compared to the noodles from LDF (middle road). But well, this is definitely a healtier choice, as I can hardly find oil from the soup. Hence before the new outlet opens in Chinatown, you might want to settle for this from 7 Sensations.

All in all, it was a great dining experience at this place as the service was good, and food was up to the standard. *I did not manage to take down each individual prices, but we paid $26 each (5 of us in all), after a full 8 dishes meal, which I feel is definitely worthwhile.

Food #03

Got to know this place from the vegetarian society website. Food #03 is a Veg Place and an art project started by a group of creative people interested to change the world.
This little social enterprise is part of Post-Museum and a significant part of the profit goes to Post-Museum.
Had my Xmas dinner there. Here's the intro to contemporary vegetarian food~

BeetRoot/ Pumpkin Soups $4.00 Each

I'm not exactly a soup person when it comes to creamy and thick soups. However, the beetroot soup is a very healthy choice as it is really very thick in nature. Beetroot is very high in vitamin C so it is good for complexion too! However, some may find it hard to drink as it is very raw. As for the pumpkin soup, tastes similar to potatoes, thick as well. It tastes good with the breadsticks though.

Tempeh Burger $11.00

This is my first time trying on the tempeh burger hence I'm not able to compare with others. However, I find the taste acceptable, tempeh is soft and blends well with the fresh vegetables, egg and bread.

Spinach Pizza $12.50

Our favourite dish of the night is the pizzas. Ingredients include Spinach, Grilled Peppers, Feta and Egg, which blends well with the well baked cheese.

Asparagus Pizza $12.50

Ingredients include Asparagus, Oyster Mushroom and Olives. Tastes special as we seldom have asparagus in pizzas. Both pizzas are made using vegan and onion free special sauce base.

Red/White Linguine $7.50

Portion is just right for 1 person. The pasta is well cooked with olive oil and tastes rather blend I think. It could have been better if more ingredients like mushrooms can be included.

Banana Cow $7.00

We had the banana cow for dessert. Served on a hot sizzling plate, this is a hot Pancake with Orange Sauce. Not very sweet and the pancake is chewy. I like the almond slices on top.

Chocolate Brownie $5.00

Not the best i ate so far, tastes a little hard. I think it could have made better with a scoop of ice cream.

On the whole, I like the concept of the cafe which is very cosy and lighting is good. Its a very good and quiet place to chill out for the night. Also, almost everything is recycled at this place, making it really eco-friendly. Food wise, something different as there is no mock meat used, and no deep frying as well! A good choice for a healthy eater as we were all too full after taking all the fresh veggies. As for the price, 6 of us ordered a total of 8 dishes including deserts and it only cost $10 each, definitely Worth the ambience and food!

Note* Some items are already Vegan (V) and Onion+Garlic Free (OF). For many other items, Vegan Option (VO) and Onion+Garlic Free Option (OFO) are available.

7 Sensations

*thank you sunnietart for her review on the Christmas Meal at 7 Sensations~

I came to know of this place via Zaobao’s recommendation. They were offering a Christmas set menu which comprised of a starter, soup, main dish, dessert and drink at $39.90. I thought it was kinda ex for standard veg fare but there were not many places that offers western Xmas set meal so I wanted to give it a try.

It is located in Little India in a little alley behind Shing Siong (Tekka Market). The nice thing abt this little quaint place was the interior décor, which is contemporary and cosy, something different from the usual boring Chinese veg restaurant decor.
We were first served the starter which is a salad. There were a mixture of greens, baby tomatoes, cranberry bits. However, the sauce was quite sour and some vegs were bitter. I got to admit I’m not a salad person so I didn’t really like it.

Tuna Chowder Soup

Next came the tuna chowder soup. There were bits of celery (if I didn’t rem wrongly), veg ham, carrot etc in the clear tomato based soup. It’s the first time I had chowder soup as most veg places offer mushroom cream soup. But it was pleasantly light and delicious. I couldn’t have enough of it.

Main Dish (Aglio Olio)

The next dish is the Main Dish ~ Aglio Olio with 2 ‘drumsticks’. The Aglio Olio was a tad too oily for my liking but there were lots of mushrooms and capsicum in the dish. I thought Aglio Olio should be spicy but it was not spicy at all. The drumsticks were a nice surprise though. It was actually mashed potatoes with veg ham bits and mushrooms deep fried in batter. A creative change from the usual beancurd sheet drumsticks. In all, the main dish was pretty good, except the portion was too big for us, girls. I think it would be more ideal if they offered only 1 drumstick or 2 smaller sized drumsticks. Sometimes too much of a good thing is not good.

The dessert that evening was Passionfruit Pudding. It was not too sweet but was also quite a big bowl. However I would suggest that they could offer more choices such as mango pudding, or a hot dessert like chocolate fondue.

We ordered Enzyme for drinks. According to the staff, it is like wine but taste better than wine. And there were only 3 choices, tea, coffee or enzyme..so we chose the latter. It does taste like wine.. and unfortunately, I’m not a wine lover so I didn’t really like it either. Perhaps they should offer juices too. Or maybe I should have ask if I could choose fruit juice.

All in all, it was quite a pleasant dining experience. The food was above average, except for the salad. Service was good. Ambience was cosy. I will be back to try their ala-carte menu again, hope that its not as expensive though.
